Lighting that helps you sleep
Warm white light in the evening, a reading light on each side of the bed and a switch you can reach without getting up make a bigger difference than any decor item.
In west-facing rooms, blackout curtains keep the room cooler on summer afternoons and help everyone sleep longer in the mornings.
Small bedroom, smart storage
A bed with storage underneath, wall-hung side tables and shelves above the desk free up floor space. If the room is very small, a folding desk can make room for a second wardrobe. Keeping the floor clear is what makes a small bedroom feel restful.
Master, guest and parents' bedrooms
- Master bedroom: a larger wardrobe or walk-in, a dressing area and a feature headboard wall.
- Guest bedroom: simple, easy to maintain, with a wardrobe section kept free for visitors.
- Parents' bedroom: a higher bed, firm mattress, easy-grip handles and night lights along the floor.
- Children's bedroom: covered in detail on our kids room interiors page.
Colours and finishes for a calm room
Soft, warm neutrals with one deeper colour on the headboard wall are calm and easy to live with. Matte finishes reflect less light at night, and fabric headboards absorb sound. Bright colours work best in small doses, on cushions, throws and bedding that can be changed.
Keeping a bedroom cool in Hyderabad summers
From March to June, bedrooms on the west or top floor can stay hot well into the night. Heavy lined curtains, light-coloured walls, a ceiling fan with good air throw and an AC placed so it does not blow directly on the bed all help. We also avoid dark, heat-absorbing panelling on the wall that gets the afternoon sun.
If the room gets very hot, a false ceiling with insulation above it can reduce the heat coming through a top-floor slab.
Master bedroom design for couples
A master bedroom should feel like a retreat after long working days. For couples we plan two sides that work for two different routines: separate reading lights and switches, enough bedside storage for each person, a dressing area where two people can get ready at the same time, and soft lighting for the evenings.
Bedrooms for elderly parents
For parents and grandparents, comfort and safety come first. We keep the bed at a height that is easy to sit on and stand up from, use wardrobes with easy-grip handles and lower hanging rods, add night lights along the path to the bathroom, and choose non-slip flooring where possible. Small changes like these help elders stay independent at home.
